Daily Graphic Novel Recommendation 203

She and Her Cat

by Tsubasa Yamaguchi (after Makoto Shinkai)
Genre notes: romance, relationships, cats
180 pages
ISBN: 1945054409 (Amazon)

She And Her Cat both adapts the original 5-minute anime short of She And Her Cat: Their Standing Points (available as an extra on the Voices From A Distant Star dvd*) as well as incorporates story set up in the more recent short anime series She And Her Cat: Everything Flows.

As an adaptation, it works pretty well because it doesn't rigidly hold to its source. The original short did a fantastic job with its enviornment and the stacatto rhythms of its narration. Any comic wouldn't remotely be able to capture that nearly as well so the comic moves in another direction, instead creating a portrait of daily living (albeit through the eyes of a cat).

If you were to only consume one piece of She And Her Cat media, best to go with the original short film. If you were to take in two, this manga works well as supplementary material that takes things in a new direction. (Also, it's a cute story about a cat.) If you were bold and enamoured, you could then check out the four 7-minutes episodes of Everything Flows, available on Crunchyroll.

*Here's a pretty terrible fandub of the original.

Good Ok Bad features reviews of comics, graphic novels, manga, et cetera using a rare and auspicious three-star rating system. Point systems are notoriously fiddly, so here it's been pared down to three simple possibilities:

3 Stars = Good
2 Stars = Ok
1 Star = Bad
